Because Curaçao didn’t just participate in one of the biggest global tournaments. It reminded the entire world of that anything is possible.

As a descendent of an island that I have had to spent the majority of my life explaining to many people where it’s located, there is something profoundly emotional about watching your flag, your anthem, and your people compete on an international stage. Because for us, participation has never just been about winning. For us, it was about finally being seen and acknowledged and recognized for our greatness.

It Proved That Small Nations Are Allowed To Dream Big

One of the most inspiring aspects of Curaçao’s qualification campaign is that it challenged a belief that many carry in regards to smaller nations and that is that some dreams only belong to larger countries.

Watching Curaçao step onto the international stage was a reminder that ambition does not require permission. The amount of people living on your island is irrelevent as well as whether the rest of the world expects you to succeed. It simply asks you to believe.

For countless of people watching from Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, and throughout the Caribbean diaspora, seeing their country compete wasn’t merely entertaining. It was evidence that dreams are not reserved for others. They belong to us too.

It also makes me wonder: have we, perhaps, allowed family and unity to become less important than they once were? If there is one hope that emerges from this journey beyond football, it is that Curaçao’s example inspires us to once again prioritize connection, support, and collective success. Because while trophies can be lifted by individuals, legacies are built by communities.

The Real Victory Was Never Just Qualification

Did Curaçao qualify for the next stage? No.

But did Curaçao inspire an entire generation on a global scale to dream bigger, believe harder, and take greater pride in who they are and where they come from?
