It’s been a couple of weeks since I have returned to the office after my most recent trip, and I have to get something off my chest…

For many, creativity is a way of life, a state of mind that thrives on freedom, inspiration, and endless possibilities. But if you’re like me, stuck in the day-to-day grind of a 9 to 5 office job, that creative spark can feel like it’s flickering away. I’m experiencing it as we speak (writing this during my office job)—the weight of the routine, the dull office, and the monotonous meetings, slowly draining the life out of what used to be boundless creativity. Let me take you on a personal journey through the maze of modern office life, where the fight to keep creativity alive is very real.

The Office Conundrum

Have you ever felt like a bird trapped in a cage? That’s exactly how I feel sitting in the office day after day. Once upon a time these little spaces were meant for productivity, sure, but they suffocate any sense of imagination. Every time I walk through the hallways, surrounded by blank walls with a generic motivational poster staring back at me, I can’t help but think how ironic it is. How am I supposed to dream up something new when I’m trapped in such a dull, uniform space? It’s as if the very walls are whispering, “Stay inside the lines.”

The Meeting Marathon

Ah, meetings. We’re all familiar with the meetings that could’ve been an email. Between the unnecessary yapping, and the dreaded “let’s circle back,” I find myself zoning out, wondering how many great ideas I’ve lost to the black hole of office meetings. It’s hard to nurture a creative thought when you’re stuck in a cycle of unfinished situations.

The Email Avalanche

Then, there’s the email avalanche. My inbox is like a never-ending stream of mini-disasters waiting to derail my day. Each sender considers their message to be urgent. It’s like a game of whack-a-mole, but instead of moles, it’s emails reminding me the bureaucratic machine is always churning.

The Clock-In Curse

Creativity doesn’t operate on a schedule. If I had a dollar for every time inspiration hit me in the middle of the night, I’d be set. But the 9 to 5 workday doesn’t care about that. It’s rigid, it’s demanding, and it doesn’t leave room for those spontaneous bursts of creativity that often strike when you least expect them. Nowadays, I sit with my journal on my desk and keep my WordPress open to write as soon as inspiration hits. Because by the time I clock out, my brain feels like it’s been on a hamster wheel all day, and often any creativity and energy I had is gone.

Now that I got this out of my system…

I also realize that this office job provides me with the opportunity to financially support my creative endeavours. And I am grateful that it does so. Until my creative endeavours allow for sufficient income to support themselves *looks up at the Universe*.

But I can’t help but feel that the modern office feels like the enemy of creativity, but I’ve come to realize that the creative spirit is resilient. It can survive—no, thrive—even in the most sterile environments. It takes effort, no doubt, but finding ways to keep that spark alive is worth it. After all, I am the creator of my dreams. Creativity is who I am, and I will not allow an office to take that away.
